Andy Warhol

The current exhibition at the Ferregut Tower Gallery in Southampton, New York, Fifteen Minutes, is
derived from Andy Warhol's famous phrase "Everyone has 15 minutes of fame". The two person show
features Mr. Warhol's portrait paintings, drawings and silk screen prints of famous people and
Christophe von Hohenberg's photographs of the famous people in Andy Warhol's life. The Ferregut
Gallery will exhibit images by Andy Warhol from his Portrait series. Mr von Hohenberg was able to
photograph many of the same people Mr. Warhol painted as they payed tribute to Andy at his memorial
at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on April 1, 1987. The photographs are featured in Mr von
Hohenberg and Charlie Scheips's new book: Andy Warhol: The Day The Factory Died. Published by
Empire Editions this fall.
The exhibition will open on November 4 - December 19. There will be a reception on November 24 from
6-9 pm. In conjunction with the reception at the gallery, there will be book signing, across the street at
the Parrish Art Museum, from 6-8. Also an artists reception on the 25 from 6-8.
Mr Warhol is legendary for his original images of famous people and of everyday mass produced
consumer items such as his Campbell Soup Can series and his Del Monte Peach Halves series. He
made both sets of images: the portraits and the consumer products stand out-- like Egyptian icons.
Bigger than life, the people and the products appear important and precious, yet at the same time
--distant and cold. Mr. Warhol's method of mass producing images, utilizing several assistants, gave his
studio in New York City the infamous name :" The Factory". One could say, that his passion for
notoriety, also made him the creator and director of the party scene and artistic happenings of New York
City in the 60's and 70's, many of which took place at the Factory, and other playgrounds of the day,
places such as Studio 54.
It is interesting to note that Andy also had close ties to Southampton. He was one of the Tower Gallery's
original artist. In the 70's Andy showed his Brillo Box Sculptures for bargain prices that did not sell well.
Now they are valued collector's items that can't be found. Andy also became friends with the local artist
Fairfield Porter and on one of his visits to Southampton Mr. Porter painted Andy's portrait along with his
then lover. The painting can be viewed at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
